Pubs & Bars

There’s a huge range of bars in Bangkok, and downtown Bangkok at night can become a frenetic, pulsating, lively place.

There are many western-style expat pubs, go-go bars, hostess bars, cocktail lounges, huge supper-clubs, street-side cheap and cheerful places and many more options. There are also lots of gay and lesbian bars, with whole areas dedicated to gay or mixed crowds.

There are many areas in which you can bar-hop between many close-by pubs, or you can take a taxi to a stand-alone club which will typically feature live music and lots of whisky.

Most places in Bangkok close at 1am or 2am at the latest, leaving you to either go home (the sensible option!) or continue on to find an illegal “after-hours” pub which often involves quickly ducking under a half closed shutter and tip-toeing upstairs into a packed and sweaty room filled with other like-minded party-goers.

Some after hours places don't actually open until 3:30am or even 4am, meaning that the many pavement bars on Sukhumvit Road may be your only option.

Escudo

Half-pub, half-club, Escudo is two floors of chic interiors and pumping sounds. Slap-bang in the city's happening hub of Thonglor, fresh-faced local hipsters come here to sip whisky, dance and hang out. The first floor DJ's spin mostly mainstream hip-hop, while upstairs is more house-music driven. Very, very busy on weekends. Recently renovated.
Open: 20:00 - 01:00
Location: 4/F, Dutchess Plaza Building, Sukhumvit Soi 55, Thonglor on
Sukhumvit

Escobar

On weekends this place is filled with hip-hop and raging hormones. There is a small bar on the right for chilling out as the main bar just after the entrance gets pretty crowded during the weekends. Prices are good with a bottle of Red Label and mixers going for around 1,400 baht.
Open: 18:00 - 01:00
Location: 217/1-3 Sukhumvit Soi 63, Ekamai on
Sukhumvit

Glow

A diminuitive bar-club fusion featuring lounge beds, long sofas, minimalist interior decor and smart lighting design. It's USP (unique selling point): tables are lit from below through acrylic to create the signature 'Glow' and, like a nocturnal chameleon, the bar adapts its colour (florescent lighting) to suit mood, crowd or sounds.

Quick-handed bartenders mix up your favorite cocktails. Drink prices are pitched slightly lower than at the area's major clubs, and, bravely, the music-policy renounces hip-hop in favour of house, breakbeat and electro. Serve a selection of quality house wines and Tapas.
Open: 18:00 - 01:00
Location: 96/4-5 Sukhumvit Soi 23 on
Sukhumvit

Booze

Hordes of beautiful locals, big-screen-TVs and a decent live band playing styles veering from Linkin Park rock to Thai Pop back round to Eminem. And yes, lots of boozing.
Open: 18:00 - 02:00
Location: Sukhumvit 55 Soi 10, Thonglor on
Sukhumvit

Gazebo

Gazebo is a rooftop bar-cum-club where balmy winds and nocturnal city views mix into a heady cocktail. It's all a little like the entrance to a half-built pleasure palace. Resist the temptation to turn back; views entertain while you sip cocktails in what feels like an upscale Moroccan loft. The plump cushions, the soft lamps, the shisha pipes (and the lack of air-conditioning…) are all heavily redolent of Cairo.

Includes ‘The Zed Bar’ – a state-of-the-art DJ room where you can belly dance into the small hours. A sultry evening breeze heightens the Arabian Night's feel, while the live reggae band adds to the eclecticism. Then, once the cocktails have kicked in and your eyes glazed over, head next door to meet Gazebo's raucous alter ego: a small, dark club room thick with 3am nocturnes and loud dance beats. Entry is 300 baht after midnight.
Open: 20:00 - Late
Location: Upstairs, 44 Chakrapong Road on
Rattanakosin

Immortal

A legendary player in the Khao San music scene, Immortal has cracked the secret for longevity: play the music you love, and crank it very, very loud. With drum & bass, punk, rock, metal and nu-metal sometimes played, the music policy has a distinct alternative, industrial edge. However, this is a hip-hop club at heart. Has various Happy Hour offers, and the price of entry (which varies according to the night) includes a drink. Dark, shady and unglamorous, but often very fun.
Location: 1st floor of the Bayon Building, 249 Khao San Road on
Rattanakosin

Breaks

A small, low-key space decked out like an underground warehouse party and with a music policy and crowd to match. Reeking of mainstream defiance, 12" record covers hang off the walls instead of the usual generic fittings. These, and the uncompromising nights it hosts, are the joyous end-product of the Japanese proprietor's devotion to rebellious dance music.

Disco, indie, drum & bass, old school hip-hop, electro, roots, techno, Latin - any fresh, edgy sound brimming with attitude gets an airing. If disillusioned with what qualifies as real music in Silom's other clubs, 'Breaks' comes recommended.
Open: 21:00 - 03:00 (Wed, Thu, Fri, Sat)
Location:

b (next to Richard's restaurant, up some stairs) on Silom

Funky Dojos

This obnoxious, sleek white box of a club sits in the thick of Patpong’s flying ping-pong balls. Come enjoy some of Bangkok's best electro technicians (including the excellent DJ Saint Vincent) and the deliciously sleazy vibe.

Grab a stool overlooking the alleyway for some of the most debauched people-watching in town. Then head to the graffiti-strewn back to dance like a nutter alongside the salacious mix of lustlorn men and off-duty go-go girls. Not for everybody then, but leave your sex industry indignation at home and there's fun to be had. Stays open till 03:00.
Open: early - 03:00
Location: 105 Patpong Soi 2 on
Silom

The Barbican

Stylish and sophisticated, the Barbican is Bangkok's classic inner-city bar. The ground floor is dominated by a huge bar and juke box, whilst upstairs there is a great restaurant with good European pub food and sporting events (constantly shown on the television). DJs play a variety of musical styles, enhancing the Barbican's reputation as a place to enjoy a drink after a hard day trekking around Silom Road. Happy Hour 17:00 - 19:00
Open: 11:30 - 02:00 Monday - Saturday; 11:30 - 24:00 on Sunday
Location: 9/4-5 Soi Thaniya, Silom Road on
Silom

Hu'u

Catering to the city's sexy elite, the atmospheric Hu'u bar (pronounced 'who') oozes sophistication. Dim violet tones and dark wood floors set the tone, with Thai silk-upholstered sofas, tall-bar and a striking liquor shelf rounding off the ever-so stylish ambiance of this two-storey atrium lounge. A mezzanine restaurant upstairs serves international cuisine, but snacks are also served in the bar.

The impressive drinks menu offering over 150 cocktail concoctions will keep you busy, and prices are not staggeringly expensive like at other places of similar calibre. DJ's play proper nu-jazz and chill-out tunes, making it a great place for a pre-club tipple, or to impress your date or business client.
Open: 11:00 - 01:00
Location: 1st & 2nd floor, The Ascott, 187 South Sathorn Road on
Silom

Met Bar

When it first opened in 1998, London's Met Bar became the hottest nighttime haunt west of Ibiza. Now its newest sister, The Met Bar Bangkok, delivers the same for the Asian capital, answering a sophisticated need for privacy and energy in a space reserved for hotel guests and members only (although they are known to be flexible).

At night, it morphs into a sultry, lounge-style members bar with deep chairs and wine-dark walls. Lighting is soft and moody. Bar staff - 'mixologists' - create bespoke Martinis while headline DJs spin worldwide lounge sounds. Drinks start at 200 baht and there's no cover charge. At its busiest and best when hosting an international act or one-off event.
Open: 16:00 - 02:00
Location: The Metropolitan, 27 South Sathorn Road, Sathorn on
Silom

My Bar

One of the coolest lounge bars in Bangkok to unwind with your affluent friends, or if don't have any, meet some. A strange but successful blend of modern decorative touches with plush lounge tastes. It's bright, light and thoroughly contemporary in feel, making it a good choice if you fancy inventive cocktails while listening to a sprightly band playing jazz, blues, R&B and pop. There's a small but inspiring wine list and a good spread of imported beers and whiskeys.
Open: 17:00 - 01:00
Location: Upper lobby, The Dusit Thani, 946 Rama IV Road, Silom/Lumpini on
Silom

Sky Bar

Soaring 63 floors above Bangkok, the breathtaking panorama is reason in itself to enjoy a drink at the Sky Bar. A notoriously impressive spot, Bangkok visitors place it at the top of their ‘to do list’. Creating one of those memorable experiences that is not easily forgotten. The bar was designed by the same man who created the set for the movie Blade Runner, the actual Sky bar juts over the edge and is the only place to be when the sun is setting over the Chao Phraya. Quite simply spectacular.

Silom

O'Reilly's Irish Pub & Restaurant

Tapas

On groovy and predominantly gay Soi 4, this chic Moroccan grotto is the place to go for Balearic house music. Set in an atmospheric two-storey venue, it attracts a straight, hip and beautiful crowd, the occasional celebrity just itching to be spotted. Live percussionists perform twice a week.

While a great price to chill during the week, it's usually hot and heaving on weekends, especially upstairs. Should the interior's charm turn to claustrophobia, head for the al fresco area out front with its rattan chairs, chatty cocktail enthusiasts and processions of toned men and other night creatures.
Open: 20:00 - 01:00
Location: 114/17 Silom Soi 4, Sala Daeng on
Silom

Twilo

'Twilo' is the kind of chic open-fronted venue that, if it was plunked in Rome or Paris, would soon be heaving with svelte, young sophisticates sipping cosmopolitans and carousing to sultry deep house. The music - the same nightly formula of turgid live hip-hop - is geared towards drawing in the largest possible number of passing tourists. They, in turn, attract the largest possible number of Patpong's freelancing bargirls. And, in a rather depressing vicious circle, their presence attracts even more tourists. Still, though drinks prices are high, the droves keep on coming and the place is often hopping.
Location: 70 Patpong Soi 1, Silom on
